Heat and the Body

Keywords: definition of heat, body temperature, hypothalamus, heat loss,  breathing, circulation, sweating, acclimatization, risk factors, heat index.

Abstract: Radiant heat from the sun warms the body. To a degree, the body generates some of its own – metabolism. The hypothalamus, a tiny gland in the brain, detects a rise in body temperature and instructs the body to sweat, to expand the blood vessels and to increase the heartbeat and breathing rate. When the temperature rises too much, discomfort and illness develop. The elderly, the very young and the sick are at greatest risk. Acclimatization is a slow process. The body of a healthy person requires up to 14 days to adapt the cardiovascular system, to improve the ability to lose heat more efficiently, to open dormant sweat glands and to change the metabolism.
