Abstract: In 1995 the US recorded 1021 deaths as a direct consequence of heat. 62% of the victims were over 55 years of age. The elderly feature prominently in all risk groups, whether it is the risk of developing disorders during temperature extremes or after excessive UV radiation exposure. UV radiation damage accumulates over the period of a person's life. The body temperature regulation system, the immune system and the thirst mechanism degenerate with age. A cold bedroom and hypothermia may be the real cause when a grandparent "died peacefully in his or her sleep." A weakened body due to an underlying disease makes the elderly vulnerable to weather extremes. Statistics show a high percentage of weather sensitivity amongst the elderly population, in particular amongst women.
