The human ear

Probably every child had to experience the dreadful pain of a middle ear infection at some stage of childhood. The term ‘middle ear’ is, therefore, familiar to most people. This term also implies that there must be other parts describing the ear, or may I use a fancier name, the auditory apparatus. Yes, there are – and quite a large number of complex parts. They are, however, grouped into three main sections: the already mentioned middle ear, the outer or external ear and the inner ear. Each section performs a specific function, but together they initially convert sound pressure fluctuations into mechanical vibrations and then into neural impulses. The brain interprets these impulses and gives us the sensation of hearing.
