Cold Effects on the Cardiovascular System

Keywords: heart attacks, heart rhythm abnormalities, vasoconstriction, cold climate is relative, blood pressure increase, lower blood volume, higher cholesterol level, lower blood viscosity, changes in blood composition, risk of blood clotting.

Abstract: The relationship between cold extremes and mortality rates is well documented. Winter is the season for heart attacks in the US with 53% more cases than during summer. Cold is relative. The mortality rate during Hawaii’s winter increases by 22%, a figure similar to cold climate regions. Blood vessels in the periphery constrict resulting in higher blood pressure. The number of particles in the blood, such as platelets, red blood cells, fibrinogen and cholesterol, increases in cold conditions and make the blood thicker - increased viscosity.
